Tahar LAOUI – Short Biography

Professor Tahar Laoui earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. Throughout his academic journey, he held positions at several renowned institutions, including KU Leuven (Belgium), the University of Wolverhampton (UK), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Saudi Arabia), and the University of Sharjah (UAE), where he currently serves. His primary research focuses on advanced and nanostructured materials, nanocomposites, membranes for desalination and water treatment, as well as additive manufacturing technologies.

Over the years, Professor Laoui has contributed to a wide range of research projects. His earlier work in additive manufacturing involved the development of advanced dental implants and composite powder systems (such as WC-Co, TiB₂-Ni, ZrB₂-Cu, Steel-Cu) for use in cutting tools, molds, and structural components like EDM electrodes. His ongoing research includes the study of cobalt-based and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) using selective laser melting (SLM). This process enables the fabrication of complex components with tailored microstructures and mechanical properties. He combines experimental methods with computational simulations to better understand and predict phase formation and microstructural evolution during the SLM process.

Professor Laoui is a former Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and has served on editorial boards of several reputable journals, including Materials Letters, Membranes, and npj Clean Water. He has been active in multiple professional societies such as the Materials Research Society, European Membrane Society, American Ceramic Society, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. As an experienced reviewer and academic contributor, he has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and holds 16 granted patents.
